Migrating to Odoo without losing your data (or your mind)
A data migration is the riskiest part of any ERP switch. Here's the sequence we follow to move clean, trustworthy data into Odoo, and what we deliberately leave behind.
The moment that makes or breaks an ERP go-live isn’t the training or the configuration. It’s the data. Move it badly and every report, every decision and every user’s trust is built on sand.
Here’s the sequence we follow to get it right.
1. Decide what not to migrate
The instinct is to bring everything. Resist it. A migration is the best chance you’ll ever get to leave behind duplicate contacts, dead products and fifteen years of test records.
We start every project by agreeing what stays behind. Less data, cleaner data, faster go-live.
2. Map before you move
Every field in the old system needs a defined home in Odoo, or a deliberate decision to drop it. Mapping first turns a chaotic copy-paste into a repeatable, reviewable process.
3. Clean at the source
Deduplicate, standardize formats and fix obvious errors before import, not after. Cleaning inside Odoo means cleaning live data with users already working on it, far harder and riskier.
4. Migrate in dry runs
We never import once. We import into a staging database, check totals, spot-check records, then throw it away and do it again. By the real go-live, the process has run cleanly several times.
5. Reconcile with numbers, not vibes
After the final import, we reconcile against hard figures: record counts, account balances, stock quantities. “It looks right” is not a validation. A matching total is.
The payoff
Done this way, day one in Odoo feels calm. The numbers match, the reports are trustworthy, and your team starts on solid ground instead of firefighting.
Clean data isn’t the boring part of a migration. It’s the whole point.
